I hate writing reviews for Roxane Gay because a) she is a million times clever with prose than me, and b) there's hardly anything to be said about her excellence that hasn't been already been said by OTHER people who are cleverer with prose than I am. But my linguistic insecurities aside, this is a brilliant series of essays by a woman who I would have no problem describing as one of the finest writers of our age (if not any age).

First of my 2016 nonfiction challenge books.
It's funny to me how fast pop-culturally focused essays can start to seem dated. This book was only published 18 months ago, and already some of the essays deal with things that feel hopelessly out of date. A lot of the essays are pretty shallow in conceit and lacking in focus as well. That's not to say I didn't connect or agree with plenty of what Gay had to say--I definitely did. There are so many things that I love about this book: the shrewdness & clarity, the vibrancy of her voice, the deliciously honed criticisms of pop culture, rape culture, & privilege. I wanted so many times to shout, Yes! This is how I think, only you are more articulate than me! Say it, & I will email my friends & practice borrowing retorts.
Really, I almost took away one star just because I always loathed sweet valley high.

A stellar collection of essays. Gay's writing is clear and evocative without ever being pretentious and overwritten. Her writing about race and gender is passionate and persuasive. Her discussions about the time she was gang-raped are heartbreaking and left me shaken.
