everyone already read this last year, but i'm still catching up. anyway, this took me a while to really get into and tbh, that's probably more my fault than adichie's, but apparently all i needed was a few hours on a plane and no distractions to let myself actually read this. immigrant stories are of particular interest and this one is beautifully written, funny and heartbreaking, and made me want to call my parents and ask them a million questions.

I was so inside this while I was reading it, the voice of the main character was so distinct. I was reading it on a pleasurable level to find out what happened to her and her love story, the story of a woman out of place in academia, but also to gain the rare feeling that sometimes happens with novels, where you realize what it must be like for another person, their experience of being in the world.

This is an excellent book, one of the best I've read in a while. It covers:
- race relations in America, including black/white and African American/American African
- the experience of being an illegal immigrant
- things that white Americans do around people of color that make them look clueless
- ordinary life in Nigeria
- love
among other things.
If you grew up/live in a very white area of the US, this book is likely to be educational on several levels. But it is also extremely well-written and not p ...more

Compelling, interesting novel that touches on tough topics-- race, immigration, academia, etc.-- with a humorous touch. It's very apparent that Adichie is studied in observing people, and listening closely to dialogue. The protagonist's blog is well-deployed as a narrative device.
