This is one of the most rigorous and methodically constructed treatises you will find anywhere in philosophy. Heidegger is known for his difficulty, but this book holds an added challenge due to its cumulative dependence. What I mean is, you cannot possibly come to fully grasp the later sections of the book without grasping earlier sections. This is not light reading. I picked it up thinking it would help me understand Sartre and it took over six months to finish. Don't let that scare you, the book is worth it. This book redefined philosophy for a reason. Heidegger may have been a horrible person but he knew what he was talking about... if only the rest of us did!

I recommend this book highly. If you can conquer it every other book not only has a paradigm shift but everything else is easier to read. I picked up 'Being and Nothingness
