i just want to start off this review by saying i had ZERO idea what to expect from this book. in fact i didn’t even realise it was a fantasy until i searched it up on pinterest. i thought it was more of a dystopian vibe, just based off the font on the front cover (okay so i know i shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover but i want to be honest (it’s clear i didn’t look properly at the cover seeing as there’s a bunch of things that hint it’s a fantasy)).

This book made me understand the purpose of audiobooks (or how I’ll be using them). There are some books that you are curious enough about to read, but you also don’t want to dedicate time to them when there are other books that are much more interesting to you. I think it would have taken me months to read this one had I not had the audiobook.

It could’ve been worse, honestly. I knew when picking up this book that I wouldn’t love it, but I chose to read it anyway. It wasn’t a waste of my time a This book made me understand the purpose of audiobooks (or how I’ll be using them). Overall, I did find this to be an enjoyable read. I had fun. Sometimes when I read, I get so critical of everything that I forget to just relax and enjoy the book for what it is. Like I said, I knew that it wouldn’t be my new favorite book, so I can’t say that my expectations were crushed or anything because it’s about what I anticipated.

It’s a fun and a little cringey novel that tries to combine itself with more complex themes. There are parts that I guess I was supposed to feel emotional at that completely went over my head because they felt so random and I had no attachment to the characters involved.

Speaking of characters, I hated the way the character of the villain was handled. He was supposed to be this heartless outlaw when he really seemed like a businessman that had a feud with the king, and then he’s petty and violent because of it, and we really aren’t able to understand any of it until the end. Also it might have just been me but I still have hardly any idea what the “shipments” were and what the business was or anything like that. I think it’s interesting when villains are smart and conniving, but he was (or at least seemed) too petty to be considered interesting. Plus, we never see him before he’s been affected by Evie, so his “character development” falls flat.

Evie herself was meh. I have no idea who she was even though I just read an entire book about her. Throughout the book, she tries not to be appalled by the acts of violence done by the villain and convinces him to change his ways while also having a feud with the stiff, rule following Becky. She’s a sunshine character (which I love) and despite having so much background and awful things happen to her, I feel like she doesn’t have much personal change. Like, I don’t know, I feel like the change in her character had already started somewhere between the prologue and chapter 1, so when we see more development, it’s like the same Evie it’s always been. Also did this book really have to mention how small she is like every 10 seconds??

I wish that there hadn’t been a time skip between the prologue and chapter one. I wish that we had gotten to see Evie grow to understand the villain and see how she changed him before he had been less violent. I wish that we could have been introduced to the business more with Evie and get to see her grow closer to characters instead of meeting them when she already has built a relationship with them. I think this book is seriously lacking in development and heavy in plot and backstory.

I know I ranted about this book a lot, but I honestly did like it. I don’t know, I’m probably gonna listen to the second book anyway because I can’t leave this book like that! I did enjoy the quiet moments when Evie was around her friends and they were just being themselves and having fun. I thought the world was cool as well because small village surrounded by a forest with mythical creatures is a pretty interesting setting. I just think that for the most part, the book should have less information and more change. But if you can sit back and learn to just enjoy it for what it is, I think you’ll have a fun adventure! ...more

I've read some insanely cringey things in my life, but this book was definitely the worst. Every single thing that came out of someone's mouth made me need literal therapy. I was literally so SO SOO close to DNFing this book, but I forced myself through it thinking that it might get better (it did not, in fact, get better). i love this book because it was such a page turner, and i just could not put it down. (my teachers got mad at me in class for reading too much). the cliff-hanger it ends on literally had my jaw drop to the floor. i was devestated. not because the ending was a bad ending, (it was a heartbreaking one though), butt because i need to go to the bookstore after finishing writing this review to go buy the next book. so i'm going to the bookstore now! ...more
