I loved every second of this book. The world Stephanie Garber created is so magical and unique, and I couldn’t get enough of the twists and turns. Evangeline was such a relatable protagonist, and Jacks was impossible not to be intrigued by. The mix of heartbreak, hope, and fantasy was perfect—I didn’t want it to end!

ok i LOVED this book, to say the least. like this was sooo good.

side note: i did read this before i read the caraval series, whoops, but its ok because i finished the caraval series and can finally continue this one

ok so the first half felt a bit slow but once they got into the north it was really good. the scene with tabitha fortuna (the granny with the dogs) was kinda creepy but it was also interesting at the same time. all the tales about the magical things like the arches and the curses were ...more

I LOVE IT!! I’d recommend it to people who like the cruel prince etc. I haven’t read Caraval and even tho it was a little confusing at first, I got used to it, so it’s not that bad if you haven’t read Caraval. Definitely recommend for people who liked folk of the air

Eva: always love. Smart, but also kind and forgiving? YES PLEASE. While I love a good vigilante, it’s nice to have a normal (ish) mc

, im sorry but i finished this at school and realized u were supposed to read caraval first??? like… yeah so now im continuing with ouabh & gonna listen to caraval trilogy in audiobook (on hold) since I don’t have psychical copies of those & my ouabh copies r from the libary!!

thoughts:
omg im in love w this couple and NEED to see what happens & am prob gonna binge read some more like a crazy person <3

also I want to read caraval after just to see more of these characters xx 💋

Characters-
I only started to like Jacks towards the end. He was a pretty flat character to me. After the vampire venom (also, by the way, what was that? more on this later) I was getting more of the intended vibes from him, but then he didn’t do anything, just laid around and slept.
Evangeline was naive and boring. Definitely gave too much “uwu” vibes to me. Her pure heart and 2.5 stars rounded up because I like this author’s other books and think it has potential for the second.

Evangeline was naive and boring. Definitely gave too much “uwu” vibes to me. Her pure heart and all the dramatic deliberating over Marisol really got old. She’s a witch. Tada! Unsurprised due to the amount of foreshadowing that was all spoon-fed to the reader through Evangeline’s thoughts. Characters like Evangeline can be much more interesting, imo.
I hated Apollo. One-dimensional comedic character. The whole thing was so rushed. I wish we’d gotten more of his interaction with her before magical instalove, and more face-to-face with him under the spell to unsettle us more. That whole plotline bored me.
Oops. Now he’s dead. Remind me why I should care? He was a painfully one-dimensional character with a personality that was incredibly removed from endearing. It’s giving puppy with seperation anxiety 😭😭
LaLa was very entertaining! She seems deeper than the other characters, what with her Fate backstory and all. I actually really liked her and hope she features more!!
Setting-
scrumptious. Loved the little dragons and food. I would literally love to live in the North. The scandal sheets were hilarious as well!! I loved how we got to see something more of the caraval universe.
General silliness-
Jacks’s schemes are unsurpassed. What was bro doing the entire time 😭😭 it was pretty funny ngl
Didn’t love how the author kept using the word “décolletage”. Come on, you can say cleavage (especially when Jacks is staring straight at Evangeline’s. I’d say that can’t be made more appropriate by using a word that miiight sneak it past the sensors). My opinion: either give her a low neck and don’t comment on it if you only have one word, Or give her a nice high neck. that’s something I don’t see a lot of throughout her books. feel like she’s missing out on an opportunity to make these gowns super varied and silly! a corset and a low cut neckline do not equal beauty, or even a flattering dress. I’d love to see more high necks, big poofy sleeves, more dresses that aren’t focused on sexy. (this might be a little pet peeve left over from caraval…. 🤫🤫🤫)
Ok where did those vamps come from? Why haven’t we heard about them before???? Why aren’t they mentioned in Caraval if humans get turned into vampires all the time? Why aren’t they regulated? Why! Aren’t! These! Vampires! Supported! By! Worldbuilding!

That’s all! I think this was definitely a book people could love, just not for me. Similar to my view of the second Caraval book; a little too “no plot, just vibes”.
