The Monuments Men is an in-depth look at the origins and missions of the Monuments Men during World War II as they tried to preserve historical sites and recover stolen art.
I thought that Edsel struck an excellent balance between being engaging and being historically accurate. He clearly did a lot of research and it shows, but to me the book seemed more narrative than is usual for a history book.

I'm not a huge fan of nonfiction, but this book told such a unique and moving story that I found myself eager to read more. There is a lot of repetition in the prose, but it was helpful rather than off-putting, mostly due to the large cast of characters. The most interesting parts for me were the letters sent home by the Monuments Men, and I wish more of them had been included.
