‘A Couple's Submission’ is the latest novel from Sara Desmarais, and quite possibly her most sophisticated to date. It’s a subtle, slow-moving tale that really explores the psychology of consensual sexual slavery. Sara takes the time to establish her characters – dominant and submissive both – and allows them to exist as people to whom the reader can relate. Sam and Jill could easily be the couple next door, and while Thomas and Irena are an idealized sort of dominant couple, they have distinct personalities that make them come alive.

A key element of Sam’s submission is the act forced feminization, complete with devices of physical and psychological emasculation, as well as forced (or encouraged) bisexuality. “A male in today's world who feels feminine, or heaven forbid, wants to act feminine, is rarely accepted,” notes Sara. “Males learn from an early age to repress these urges and feel ashamed by them, but having feminization 'forced' on them allows them to be who they are—feminine—without guilt.”

While Sara has certainly played with guilt, humiliation, and personal shame in her previous works, ‘A Couple's Submission’ leads the reader deep into the ‘sissy’ psyche to understand just how and why we so easily allow ourselves to be feminized. Some readers may find Sam’s feminization a bit too plain for their tastes, but that’s what makes it so psychologically powerful. Rather than clouding the issue with wigs, cosmetics, painted nails, and rituals of hair removal, Sam is transformed with little more than a pair of panties, silky pantyhose, and a pink chiffon babydoll.

It’s the actions of his wife, more than anything, that drive his emasculation home.

It’s worth noting that Sara’s writing is not meant to inspire transgendered men on how come out as a woman, but to provide a safe, secure, private outlet of expression. While there are certainly some blurred lines between transgender issues with forced feminization fantasies, Sara is careful not to suggest they are one and the same. “The characters in my books,” she says, “are exaggerated for erotic effect – they do not represent how 'real' transgendered people live. Believe me, as a transgendered myself, I recognize this.”

Beyond Sam’s transformation, what is perhaps most striking about ‘A Couple's Submission’ is the level of detail invested in the concept of submission. Beyond learning about how and why Thomas and Irena enjoy what they do, the 9 page Temporary Contract of Consensual Ownership is a thing of beauty. Safe, sane, and consensual, it really allows the reader to envision a scenario in which they might actually be able to explore such a fantasy off the page.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a Sara Desmarais book without a little sexual submission and cuckold clean-up to provide a healthy climax, but she smartly takes it one step further, pulling all of the themes together. Whereas many authors would have chosen to end with a lingering mess of fluids, Sara brings us back to the love that Sam and Jill continue to feel for one another, with the sweet declaration that sharing the submission was their favorite part.

Good story about a couples journey to submission, some nicely erotic parts as well as some horribly humiliating parts mainly for the sissy husband, as his wife gets exactly what she wants. I did find the writing style irritatingly repetitive at times which lost it one star.
