This was good, but not the best.
I didn’t like that they laughed at literally everything.
It was a mix of Hunger games, Red queen, ACOTAR, Maze runner. So nothing original if I'm honest.
But I really enjoyed the story and the twists.
Kai and Paedyn were good characters, however I wont be think about them all the time. They just didn’t leave that feeling in me. But their end was heart shattering.
So yeah 3,8 = 4 ⭐
I'm for sure looking forward to reading the other books😻! ...more

HERE'S TO MY FIRST FANTASY BOOK AS AN ADULT!!!!!! i thought i hated fantasy books because as a child they were NOT my jam.... BUT THIS!!!!!!! i'm literally so gagged right now i read this in two days and immediately ordered the second one on amazon because WHATTTTT!!!! i saw the twists coming but that didn't keep me from enjoying any of it and the characters were to die for. only thing holding this back from 5 stars is some repetitiveness in the writing style that i found distracting at times. b ...more

The plot was giving Hunger Games, but not in a way that annoyed me at all. There were times where I felt the story slacking but those times were short lived.

For this being Lauren Robert’s debut book, it’s expected to be a little rough.

I enjoyed the overall premise of the book but it felt too much like it was copying other books in the genre. Robert’s puts a fantasy magic spin on the concepts of stories like the hunger games or maze runner but it wasn’t unique enough for me to enjoy it as something new and different.

I enjoyed the overall premise of the book but it felt too much like it was copying other books in the genre. Robert’s puts a fantasy magic spin on the concepts of stories like the hunger games or maze runner but it wasn’t unique enough for me to enjoy it as something new and different.

This book failed to make me understand the world and could have done with some more political and historical world building. We never really get to understand what the plague actually was and why the trials exist because of them. The class divide was very base level slummers v. the elite with the additional layer to the fantasy politics of the ordinaries (the people without magic) v. the elites (the people with magic). I don’t mind a classic fighting systematic oppression story but it felt bland to me.

I wasn’t a fan of Kai because of how surface level his character was. Kai is the future enforcer prince who kills all ordinaries and sentences the people who shelter ordinaries to some place that I forgot the name of because it stopped being relevant after the first 100 pages. He’s meant to be charming and caring but I just found him annoying. I didn’t like the love at first sight idea and his flirty comments towards Pae was just eh…to me.

I liked Pae a little more then I did Kai but I still wasn’t in love with her. Pae is the stereotypical badass female character who can do anything she puts her mind to except she fails immediately everytime and almost everytime, she needs Kai to save her. It was annoying and overdone and I often found myself cringing at her.

The language was my biggest struggle in this book. I hated the repetitive comments about Paes “ocean blue eyes” and her “silver strands” of hair or Kai’s “annoying dimples whenever he smirks”. I especially got tired of the nicknames. I didn’t mind him calling her Pae but it was an ick when she would repeatedly call him a cocky bastard/Prince and she would be referred to as princess or silver knight. The language was boring and it was a struggle to push through and finish.

Things I did enjoy:

I really loved Kitt and I think I would’ve liked the book better if Kitt was the intended love interest instead of Kai. Kitt is everything I wanted Kai to be and more. He isn’t perfect and he is a product of the environment he was raised in, the position he was raised to be in. Kitt is intended to be the future king and has been sheltered all his life. He is used by Pae, who genuinely cares for him as a friend, but has to betray him for her cause. Kitt loved her romantically but quickly sees her as an enemy, after her betrayal. Kitt was genuinely compelling as a character and I feel like an enemies to lovers romance between Kitt and Pae would have been much more interesting. Especially because Kitt makes it clear that he wants to listen and learn from Pae on how to be better for his underprivileged people.

I will be reading the second book since this is the authors debut book and I want to give her a chance!! ...more

Not only was this marketed as “if the child of the hunger games and red queen didn’t look anything like its parents” it was also a blatant lie! How can this be said when it is essentially a carbon copy of Red Queen?

I could go into detail about how there is plagiarism from MULTIPLE series such as Red Queen, The Selection, Hunger Games and Shatter me, however there are multiple reviewers who have already done this better than I could.

Now, the writing. For a debut novel, it’s not bad. For a book that is being hyped to the max, where people are saying it’s the greatest piece of fantastical literature they’ve EVER read, and calling it a “masterpiece”, it was complete shit. Dogshit.

This, to me, seemed like an unedited draft that had no semblance of editing done whatsoever. Many grammatical errors, run on sentences, continuity errors, I could go on! And what’s happened to show not tell people! Hello? That’s like one of the first things we learn in school! How is it that so many authors these days don’t know how to do this? I do not need to be told everything! I am not an idiot. I should be able to infer things and come up with my own thoughts or theories without it just being written down for me.

Also, STOP WITH THE EYES. The blue eyes oh my fucking god. The damn description of eyes always gets me. I do not fucking care.

If I bought the book, I would’ve burned my copy. Thankfully I pirated it because I knew about the discourse going in and was not going to disrespect actual authors by reading plagiarism of their work.
