This book was recommended to the LCBC because of the popularity of A Man Called Ove. Book Club members were not as fond of this book as they were of A Man Called Ove. They found that they had a hard time keeping up with the fantasy world created by the grandmother and the granddaughter. There were many characters, "alter egos," and stories.

One of our Book Club members had traveled to Sweden, and she spoke about how "The Sagas" are ingrained into Swedish culture. This fantasy world may be more commonplace in Sweden.

Although, for people who love fantasy worlds, and stories that come together in the end, this is a great read.

This story is told through the eyes of a precocious child struggling to make meaning of all the threads that weave through her nearly eight-year old life, that she intuits, but does not fully comprehend. In following the threads that her eccentric grandmother leaves for her, she comes to understand her world and her place in it. A thoroughly satisfying read.

This book does take a little while to get into (as my sister told me), but is a good read. It is about an eight-year-old who loses her grandmother and then must deliver a series of letters to others from her grandmother. In the process, the girl discovers how everyone who receives a letter is connected. The book has some magical realism in it, because the people's life stories have been told to the girl by her grandmother (when she was alive) in fairy tale form. ...more
