I honestly don't know how to put into words what this book was like. It was much less fantasy than i expected. The basic world building was fantastical, but it was predominantly historical fiction (with some good old pining mixed in there).

Perhaps it begins with one person. Someone you trust. You remove a piece of armor for them; you let the light stream in, even if it makes you wince. Perhaps that is how you learn to be soft yet strong, even in fear and uncertainty. One person, one piec

I bought this book on a whim because the cover was so pretty, but I just knew that I would like it. I was instantly hooked on the story and the characters. I believe Iris and Roman are relatable, and I liked how they faced what came their way.

This story is set in a fantasy world that is loosely based on the UK. I believe that Oath is London, but I could be wrong. The time period is loosely based on WW1 and in 1917, but the war in this book is between two gods, Enva and Dacre, and not between cou I bought this book on a whim because the cover was so pretty, but I just knew that I would like it. I was instantly hooked on the story and the characters. I believe Iris and Roman are relatable, and I liked how they faced what came their way.

The book starts with Iris Winnow, our main protagonist, saying goodbye to her brother Forest who is going to the front to fight. Iris is attached to her brother and she sends him a lot of letters throughout the months after, but he never answers her, until someone else does.

That someone else is Roman Kitt, who is Iris colleague at the Oath Gazette, one of the two main papers of their city and her rival. They are contending the title of columnist, so there is a lot of enmity between them, but of the kind that blurs into something else.

Iris and Roman couldn't be more different. She comes from a humble family and he is a nouveau riche. She is warm and determined while he is cold and sheltered by his rich family who has basically planned his whole life. They exchange letters and get to know each other but Iris doesn't know she's writing to Roman. She would really want to meet her new pen pal, but life has other plans.

The book is fast paced, and while I liked this, sometimes I felt like it was too fast paced and we needed more filler chapters to keep the peace steady. But then again, they are living in the time of war where every thing changes in the blink of an eye, so it made sense. The writing gave me a lot of feels and it was poetic. Even though the story didn't dwell on some issues for long (like I said, ther story was fast paced) it managed to make me feel because it it the right chords.

I'm curious to know more about the gods and I'm curious, obviously, to see where do we go from where it ended. I'm glad I won't have to wait long. ...more
