DNF'd after chapter 10. Couldn't relate to Esme AT ALL. Couldn't suspend my disbelief enough in general; too many things Esme does defy logic.

Khai and Esme had double the barriers between then Michael and Stella did. If everyone would have been honest the barrier wouldn't have been there.
Khai has autism, which no one told Esme until he mentioned, but it still wasn't explained to her what that meant. So there were misunderstandings constantly between them.
Esme is not as educated as she leads Khai to believe, but it still wouldn't have been a problem if it was explained at someone.

I absolutely loved this story. Strong, complicated characters in a great entertaining story with awesome narration. What’s not to love?!!

Wildly different responses in this series so far: book one, ugh, one star from me, while this easily knocked out four.
The first book was awful—no emotional connection to any character other than dislike and a how-was-this-published awkward sort of scene pacing. This one—this one!—I read it all in one sitting—it was paced that clippy and tense. I adored Esme’s vulnerability, strength, humility, and inner joy.
