I am not a huge reader of PNR, but I was sucked into this story because of Jack. He was just so real with his emotions and his love for his daughter was just beautiful. He would do anything to keep his daughter, Ellie, safe. After the death of his wife, Jack decides to move to start over. Let’s just say, it was definitely not what he was expecting. Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would when I first started the book because Nicolae. He's a total arsehole, and I really struggled with his character at first. The first 75 percent, I was all agog with fascinated fascination: complex characters (my pathos was bleeding out in sharp spurts); intriguing, unique situation (an unusual shifter world at war); themes of power and strength, autonomy and helplessness (my favs!); cruel, mean behaviours with a careful delivery of gradual changes (to believable love? I hoped); and tension, my god, the tension!

Suddenly it went sideways. Hard right, not gradual slide. As in, WHOOSH, we down the wrong path, brother. T ...more
