Gabrielle Maxwell’s life changes when she and her friends go to the trending club La Notte where Gabrielle becomes the lone witness to a brutal mauling by six biker thugs on a man who had been at the club earlier. Gabrielle reports the crime to the police with evidence that includes pictures she had taken only to find no one believes her and the crime scene itself shows no evidence to support what she's claiming.

Lucan Thorne and others of his kind are descendants of an alien race that settled on Earth who now police vampires who have turned rogue, an end result of bloodlust that has no cure except the final death. When word reaches him that a mortal female has evidence and knowledge of an attack by rogue vampires he searches her out with the intent to erase her memories and evidence. Frustration occurs when she turns out to be more than he'd thought ... one who is resistant to mind manipulation but more importantly a breedmate.

Lucan was taken an oath never to bond with a breedmate so Gabrielle is off limits to him but that doesn't stop his body from wanting her which he can partake of as long as he doesn't drink of her blood. She is destined to bond with one of his fellow brothers though that becoomes difficult when Lucan doesn't allow any of his brothers to court her. His excuse is that they are at war against an increasing numbers of rogues who have targeted the warriors.

I've been told has the feel of the BDB series and I agree. But. It also has the flavor of S. Kenyons Dark Hunter series & R. Zanetti's Dark Protector's series.

In this series there are good and bad vampires with the heroes here being good guy warrior vampires. They live a lonely existence until a special female enters their lives offering the opportunity to love, bond, and have children if they take the risk. Lots of angst with an evil bad guy element that wants nothing more than to achieve world domination by killing off our heroes, who are in his way, one by one.

I'm a sucker for action adventure paranormal reads that have adult content scenes that compliment the story line so I did enjoy this book on that basis. I do have differing opinions on parts of that same story line that portray our guys as witnesses to the brutality of rogue vampires on humans. For now (subject to change as I read more installments) I can see that as the long lifespan and low numbers of warriors would support that slant so it wasn't a major issue for me. My reasons would be spoiler information so you'll have to either agree or disagree. End result though is that I am interested enough to grab the next several installments to see where this goes.

Lucan and Gabrielle. It's books like this that have me wishing I could jump into the pages and give each of them a swift kick in the butt or slap on the head. Seriously. I can't say that I was rooting for either of them entirely as they made way too many naive(?) decisions in judgement with the end result that I wouldn't have been depressed if this book would have ended with a separation of the two until they grew up emotionally a little. But. Readers do need our solid core relationships in a first in series book so.......

World building. This is a classic first installment book that does provide a well rounded understanding of the premise for the series itself and the individual characters who will be featured in future installments. I really couldn't see jumping ahead and reading any future installment before this one as it does lay out who the Breed Warriors are and what they're fighting for. I do know I've got my personal favorites and just might jump ahead to read their stories instead of going in chronological order (I always have been a rebel) though I'm not quite solid on that.....

Yes, this is a book/series those who have read and enjoyed the BDB, Dark Protectors, and Dark Hunters series should check out. If you're more of a purist who doesn't appreciate similarity between authors/series you may not want to though, as you may compare and judge rather than appreciate this on it's own merits.

Listened to this on audio I really enjoyed it! Reminds me alot of the BDB series but still very good in its own way!

I was lucky enough to get this one on the first read contest. I LOVED this one. It was so good! I could not put this one down. This one was about a women who witness a murder one night and no one seems to believe her. No one but Lucan Thorne. That thrust her into a world of vampires and a war. I love the couple. Also the writer really could write a wonderful steamy love scene. Really good one if you enjoy paranormal romance.
