2020 Re-read: Probably the quickest re-read I've ever done of a KA book, I don't think I appreciated how much shorter this book was when it first came out. I also liked seeing the ties between the 'Burg and the earlier books in this series. KA's strength, even beyond the emotional scenes, are the found family throughlines she has in all her books, and this one I appreciated more on the re-read. I still think it's a bit too easy, I still hated the way Zara and Ham's relationship started on an end 2020 Re-read: Probably the quickest re-read I've ever done of a KA book, I don't think I appreciated how much shorter this book was when it first came out. I still think it's a bit too easy, I still hated the way Zara and Ham's relationship started on an ending, and that final climactic moment was a little (lotta) bit redonk (I'm sorry HOW many guys, including two cops, were there watching that old guy choke Zara for how long?? Nuh-uh, I don't think so). BUT it wasn't all bad, actually. Just not a fave.

The Premise
This is a continuation of the Colorado Mountain series, though it has a character, Graham Reece, who was introduced in For You, part of Ms. Ashley’s The ‘Burg series. If you haven’t read that series, this might be a bit spoilery - Graham, after having survived an attack by a madman, decides to return to the one woman he hasn’t been able to forget, Zara Cinders. Zara, has has a rough time of it, losing everything - her business, her house, her marriage. But through it all, she hasn’t been able to forget the one man who she loved and let go - Ham.

The Good
I like Graham and Zara’s love scenes, and I enjoyed their eventual HEA. I did enjoy the appearance of some familiar characters from the Colorado Mountain series and the world Ms. Ashley has given me many hours of pleasurable reading.

The Bad
Unfortunately, there is no new ground here - the story, the main characters in particular, the resolution, all of it feels familiar. I could predict at what percentage of the book certain things would happen, which is never a good sign. I was a bit disappointed, because I generally enjoy Ms. Ashley’s work and I had been looking forward to this release, but I found myself putting the book down because I couldn’t get into the story.

The Bottom Line (2.5 stars)
Not horrible, not great - Ms. Ashley’s formula is very evident here. Change the names, and it all begins to blend. If you haven’t read her books before this, you may enjoy it, but if you have, this will feel familiar - and have been better. Here’s hoping her next breaks some new ground. ...more

I would have to commend Kristen Ashley for being a master manipulator of situations. She really does know how to turn things into order so that when everybody else thinks one thing, she wrote another. Like how I've thought that Zara was it for Reece just because he can't have Feb. But, no, it was very nicely put in a way that was acceptable and believable that it has always been Zara for him. How does she do that? She did it with Hopper's case, too, in Fire Inside. I am a huge Kristen Ashley fan. I have read all of her books. I have not , however, been happy with her books since she got a publisher and edited all the "Kristen Ashley" out of the books. By that , I mean, they cut her books typical lengthy descriptions of what her characters looked like, where they went to eat and what the restaurant was like, how their home looked etc. They also edited out her long , satisfying epilogues which I love.

❤️ As with all of Ms. Ashley's books, I loved it.
Reece was a big-ol-jerk in the beginning but those are the boys we love to hate. It wasn't long though until I was loving him and telling Zara to pull her head out.
It was nice to catch up with some of the other characters from the other Colorado books (Mindy and Jeff, Max and Nina). I'm looking forward to whatever Ms. Ashley sends our way next. ...more
