I was pleasantly surprised by this book. While it is classical fantasy, it manages to push boundaries in a genre that, at the time, often drew its wizardly inspiration from figures like Gandalf or Merlin. Instead, this story focuses on young wizards learning their craft. There are no wars or overarching conflicts and notably, it centers on non-white protagonists, with white characters depicted as aggressors in their brief appearances.
