Just re-read this as I couldn't recall much of it from when I read it in high-school. It's a bit like a west coast version of the Walton's with better writing. The novel itself doesn't have a real strong storyline so my youngerself was not very impressed but the individual poratraits that are painted and the times that are sketched are well worth the reading time.

This is Steinbeck showing a less intense writing style. This novel is not plot driven, but the character development is true Steinbeck. Characters just trying to play the hands they were dealt and live as best they can; each searching for the happiness that always seems to elude them. I loved the inhabitants of the Palace Flophouse and Grill and appreciated the compassion of Doc.
