Neither really hated nor loved this book. It was a fair-to-passing alt-England set tale that was amusing enough but uneven, badly paced, and jumped between characters without enough threads to tie them together and make the book really work as a fluid tale. Which is sad, because it could have with the right structure. If you're just a big, big fan of Jane Austen meets SF/F (before it became all the cool new thing), then this might amuse you. brilliant book for anyone witha passion for magic and romance which doesn't take over the novel.
everyone should read it as the characters are superbly writtern and there stories entwined beautifully.
Beckett makes his world realistic and you wanting to live there yourself with the inconvenience of light times and carriage travel.
Loved the pace the twists the plots within plots
