In the last novel so far of the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James series, Deborah Crombie continues to develop the relationship and growing family of Duncan and Gemma, with Gemma newly promoted to lead a murder squad in southern London and Duncan in the midst of childcare leave from his job as as Superintendent at Scotland Yard. As usual, Duncan and Gemma both manage to become involved in the same murder investigation. This time the victim is a barrister found hogtied in a seedy hotel in the Crystal Pa

It seems like years since I've read this series. It was good to get reacquainted again with Gemma and Kincaid and family. Loved the book and loved the blossoming romance with Melody. Deborah Crombie knows well how to keep the pages turning; I couldn't put it down! I have Deborah to thank for an earlier novel that described a set of dishes Kincaid bought for Gemma done by Clarice Cliff. I was curious about her and looked her up and fell in love with Cliff's art - not the art deco style but with h

This is the first one in the series I didn’t absolutely love. I’m still fond of Gemma and Duncan and their family, but the mystery here relied too much on coincidences, and I’m tiring of the device where she flips back and forth between the past and the present, revealing the motivation or the backstory of the crime. Deborah Crombie is my favorite mystery writer and her latest novel is another winner. One thing I wish she'd do, though, is when she brings up characters/events that happened in previous books, is to give a little more recap to remind the reader of what has already happened.

Another skillfully told tale of life in England and the suffering of the innocent and the guilty, as life goes on for Gemma and Duncan, two of my favorite cops. It's hard to believe the author is from Texas, and it's clear that she loves England.

Excellent mystery, continuing the story of Gemma Jones and Duncan Kincaid, Scotland Yard detectives. Ms. Crombie gets better with her writing and plot development with each book. A young musician from a poor part of London is making his way in the music scene, while haunted by the death several years ago of his friend and neighbor.

Another enjoyable read fromDeborah Crombie. In this one Gemma is working and Kincaid is on family leave taking care of their newest arrival (that was a couple of books ago). Although he might as well be working since he keeps helping Gemma on her case. Of course, one of their acquaintances is a possible suspect.
The murders are based on an incident in the past and Crombie takes us backward and forward in time.
