I liked the second half of the book more than the first half. I had trouble staying focused on the audiobook in the beginning - it just wouldn't hold my attention. It was a little more sedate than what I normally read. I definitely agree with the comparison to Where the Crawdads Sing.

Wanda is named for the hurricane that hits Florida and kills several people including her mother and brother. Even as Florida is slowly flooded and abandoned by its residents, the ones who remain look at Wanda as an outsider and a weirdo. She finds solace with an elderly survivalist neighbor who teaches her about the land. Unfortunately, Wanda is slowly abandoned by all of the people in her life...until she encounters someone from her past.
