Although the opening two hundred pages take a while to get going, I've never enjoyed a work of nonfiction so completely. Much of the credit - most of it - goes to Lincoln himself, whose moral, personal and political greatness are nourishing to the soul, and whose mistakes serve simply to reassure us of his humanity (and our own).
