It took me 150 pages to get absorbed in this book; until then I was dragging myself through it, drowning in Alice Hoffman's thick, endless descriptions. Hoffman's descriptive lyricism has drawn me into many of her books before, but here I found it stifling; every breath of narrative was punctuated by a fit of traditions, beliefs, foods, preparations, prayers, etc. It was like walking through an endless marketplace of culture, never able to sit down or have a conversation or focus on anything spe
