This book saved me at a time I really needed it, almost like the book found me. Assassin's Apprentice is part of The Farseeer trilogy which is a great introduction to The Realm of the Elderlings.
Fitz's story is emotional; overcoming a rough beginning of his life in a world with increasing political tension and a magic system that is unique. He is the illegitimate child of royalty, expelled from the family, and quickly discovers he possesses a form of magic that is deemed taboo and perverse.
Assassin's Apprentice has a slower pace; there is a lot of world building details amidst the growing suspense of the political environment. However, it did not feel like a drag to me. The writing is thoughtful, moving, and breathed life into my imagination.
The relationships in this story are complex and fulfilling. I often felt heavily invested in how other characters related to me, and that is where Robin Hobb is gifted. Her descriptions are so that I can see the world with my own eyes, without being overly embellished. Her writing is intentional with an eloquence that flows easily and an absolute joy to read.
This is one of the few books that kept awake at night, because my dreams could never compare.
