i loved tella as a narrator. i think she's really interesting and enjoyable to hear directly from. from scarlett's point of view, tella seems selfish and a little annoying initially, but it is clear how much scarlett loves her. she literally wishes her back to life. but when we read from tella's point of view, we can see just how much she wants to prove herself and how she appreciates scarlett and her love.

i'm not sure if this is controversial or not, but i liked tella and dante. i thought that they had some cute moments and just WORKED. they literally had a whole conversation about dante being the villain and tella the hero but i don't think that's true. scarlett is the main character-that's why two books are from her perspective. tella is her sister, the side-but-just-as-important character. dante and her work, or at least they seem to.
i'm not kidding when i said that i knew that he was legend from the beginning (of this book, not caraval. i genuinely had no idea who he was during caraval). as soon as tella was looking at his tattoos and he had that bleeding heart one and said "that one i will not tell [the story of]" i was like "NANA ANNA THE ONE WHO BROKE HIS HEART" and I WAS RIGHTTTTTT
the thing i loved the most was all the references to the fates. i read the once upon a broken heart series BEFORE i read this one (which i know is not how it was supposed to be done but whatever) and i really, really liked reading jacks' original character, because i know him as he is in the second series, and it was really funny when tella was freaking out over the possibility of dying because he kissed her and i KNEW that she was his "one true love" (even though it's totally evangeline).
i sort of liked the plot line with paloma being a criminal and being trapped in the card like the fates and tella having to free her, but i didn't think it was STUNNING. of course, it was interesting, and i didn't hate it, so that's enough for me. not sure about everyone else, but it was still good.
anyways, i definitely liked this book. stephanie garber's writing is literally magic and i love all her books. 💘 ...more
