i can’t believe i even CONSIDERED dnfing this at first.

getting into a mystery/thriller is always a difficult task for me, especially when i’ve just started my hardest year of school so far. now i realized, i simply didn’t have enough time to binge this like i wanted to, so instead of risking my sleep (like last year), i’d promise myself “So. Whaddya want to do tonight?” he asked. “Should we go solve a murder?”

i can’t believe i even CONSIDERED dnfing this at first.

getting into a mystery/thriller is always a difficult task for me, especially when i’ve just started my hardest year of school so far. now i realized, i simply didn’t have enough time to binge this like i wanted to, so instead of risking my sleep (like last year), i’d promise myself i’d read this at school….and i never did. finally, a few days ago, i started making progress and slowly realized i was just as invested in this story as her other books. it was all because of my lack of time to read this that i almost dnfed!! having actual responsibilities is such a curse to readers.

so to sum that all up, DONT DNF THIS!! trust me, i was a little disconnected at first but the reveals and the creepy moments (and the little sprinkle of romance) made this all worth it. after school Wednesday, i could not put this down! this was my sole purpose in getting through each day. and now that it’s finally the weekend, i tore through this.

holly jackson just knows how to write a thriller with dry humor that appeals to the younger audience, crazy twists, and eerie tension. her books are the only slightly “scary” books i can read without ruining my sleep for the rest of the week. i HATE horror and anything remotely scary, but hers always include enough humor and of course, the male main character who always is the sweetest man to ever exist. i mean, billy did NOT disappoint. honestly a close second to ravi when considering my favorite holly jackson mmc’s. and i’m starting to understand her new style of fmcs. jet was a little blunt and…cold? at times but i honestly kinda liked her. her determination was admirable and seeing her FINALLY open up was great. obviously, no fmc of Holly’s books can top pip, but she definitely knows how to write a lead.

ughhhh and yes. i’m going to mention the “romance” again. sorry if you had to experience my updates. the YEARNING!!!! i kept forgetting they were both adults in this one, the crush billy had was so obsessed-teenage -boy. i adore him. and when i tell you i noticed every hint he dropped?? every last one. the song, the lingering looks, and the comments he’d make about her not loving him back. poor sweet billy. (but after that ending, his title definitely changed.) i am literally going to sob every time i hear stick season now—yes, holly, you could call it “the song about Vermont and sticks” all you want, but we all know it’s stick season.

and surprise, i did not guess who the killer was. i mean, i had some suspects and they were on the list, but my dumb ass was still shocked when the final chapter revealed it. that was a crazy ending though.

also am i stupid for hoping jet would suddenly realize she would actually not die at the end and live with billy forever and be peaceful and happy?

anyway, read this if you love holly jackson or want to join the fan club!!!! because it’s so worth it. ...more

idk.... i feel like this could've been so much better. the premise is so interesting (a woman solving her own murder?? woah) but the execution fell flat for me😕 it was so underwhelming. there was barely any thrill, and the plot twists were kinda obvious imo😭 plus, why is this even marketed as an "adult thriller"? the only difference between this and her YA books (other than them being 10 times better) is that fuck was used 158 times which is just insane help ...more

Thoughts:
This was so good, even the concept of this book is just incredible—a woman solves her own murder, while awaiting her own death... I cannot stress enough how much Holly Jackson's mind continues to amaze me. Since reading her AGGGTM series, I have grown to love Holly Jackson and her writing. How is she able to come up with these plot twists and different clues and pieces of evidence??? She's so talented it's so unfair.

I cannot stress enough how much Holly Jackson's mind continues to amaze me. Since reading her AGGGTM series, I have grown to love Holly Jackson and her writing. How is she able to come up with these plot twists and different clues and pieces of evidence??? She's so talented it's so unfair.

This book takes course over Halloween and the 7 days that follow. The main character, Jet, is attacked on Halloween night and wakes up in the hospital to the news that she will die in 7 days when an aneurysm finally ruptures in her head. With this devastating news, Jet decides that she is going to do the unthinkable: solve her own murder.

Personally, I enjoyed Jet as a main character. Her character was very dynamic, as she was brilliant and flawed in the best way. I really resonated with Jet's infamous line, "I'll do it later." I found it so clever of the author to make this her motto when she is faced with a situation where she can't do anything later, because later she will be dead.

I also really liked Billy, Jet's best-friend and the person who helps her find her murderer. They had such a deep connection and alliance throughout the book. My heart hurts for Billy—if you read the book,I hope you will feel the same. He is just the sweetest guy and he means so well. He always has Jet's best interest in mind and stands behind her every moment he gets. Loved him.

I'm so glad to say that I could not figure out Jet's murderer on my own! Turns out it was one of the only characters I never really suspected! I was so shocked!!!!

I feel like the book ended abruptly—just a tad—with bunch of loose ends being tied up right at the end. I wouldn't say this book is necessarily fast-paced, but it definitely unpacks a lot of clues and a lot of information throughout. Holly Jackson had me flipping through this book like no other needing to find out what happens next. It's hard not to compare it to AGGTM, but the pacing is very similar.
Another thing to note, being that this is not a YA mystery, which is what Holly Jackson does best, the adult characters worked so well for her in this book. I'm excited to read more books by her with adult characters!!!

Holly Jackson does it again! This was fast-paced, twisty and emotionally gutting in the best way. Jet was such a sharp, relatable narrator. I loved being in her head, even when things got dark.

The mystery kept me guessing and that final reveal? Brutal and brilliant. A killer read. Highly recommend!

Looking back at this book with some emotional safety distance I can confidently say: In a truly unexpected and surprising way, this book was pretty much the definition of meh.
