I first came across this novel in 1961 as a young teenager when my Mother received a copy through the post as a 'brown paper parcel tied up with string' and so the book's notoriety was my introduction. Some of my mates whispered furtively some page references that I would find of interest, concerning daisy chains and naked bodies in forest clearings. It was only fifty years later that I returned to the novel to read more thoroughly and out of academic interest.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it so easy to read (not for the prudish though).
At first I wondered why so much fuss had been made of it, other than the explicit language used of course... however I guess the thought of a woman having an affair because her husband after fighting for his country was now an invalid and wanting a child by her lover would have raised more than a few eyebrows back then.
