The Warmth of Other Suns documents the history of Black Southerners who migrated North to escape the Jim Crow South. Isabel Wilkerson tells the story through the eyes of three individuals who made the journey North which makes the book a much more intimate account than it would be otherwise.

Each of the main characters of the book set out to better their lives and those of their children. Like most people, they had successes and also challenges that led to pain and suffering along the way.
