I think we all grow up reading textbook descriptions of slavery, or seeing films and documentaries that show the conditions and treatment of slaves. Maybe then we're even brash enough to think we understand what slavery was like. This book, however, gave me a completely different perspective on slavery that nothing prior to its reading came close to giving me.
