“Doesn’t it bother you?

That all anyone talks about when they talk about you are the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo?”

“No”, she told me. “Because they are just husbands. I am Evelyn Hugo.”

This is the second Taylor Jenkins Reid novel that I have read and let me just say, this woman has a way with writing. The narration in my head seems both formal and unabridged, in a way where I feel connected to the characters at an emotional level. Although I didn’t love The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo 4.3/5 ⭐️

This is the second Taylor Jenkins Reid novel that I have read and let me just say, this woman has a way with writing. The narration in my head seems both formal and unabridged, in a way where I feel connected to the characters at an emotional level. Although I didn’t love this book the way I thought I would, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and found the story to be both beautiful and tragic.

This novel highlights the complexity of love, relationships, and identity.

In this novel, we see Evelyn, a Cuban-American woman who grew up in Hell's Kitchen, NY rise to fame in Hollywood during the 1950s. Growing up in a relatively poor neighborhood, after the loss of her mother, Evelyn wants nothing more than to follow her mother’s dream of becoming a Hollywood actress. As a young woman, Evelyn learns early on that in order to get what she wants, she has to take it herself.

During her rise to fame, Evelyn disassociates from her roots to become Evelyn Hugo-an iconic, glamorous, scandalous actress, constantly turning heads. She plays the game to get where and what she wants; She is manipulative, cunning, and clever. She calls her own shots regardless of the consequences.

The portrayal of Evelyn’s character is very raw and real; as she navigates love, she realizes that love is many things. She also comes to learn what love isn’t...The story revolves around her, highlighting her seven husbands. Readers begin to understand that the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo were often ruses to hide behind fear and her acceptance of whom she loves. Her marriages protected her, but in turn hurt the one she loves most, which is probably at large, the greatest theme. Unfortunately, to this day, many people still live in fear for whom they love and that is heartbreaking. Many people have changed and many have not. Evelyn’s struggles with her identity, relationships, and love are all so vital to the plot. As a period-piece, TJR brings out the struggles of being a female; She calls attention to the way women have to fight to get positive attention, not stemmed from pure sexuality, the over sexualization and exploitation of their bodies, the need to please, perfect and curate image, etc.

The ending of this novel was tragic but in an antithetical way. Evelyn Hugo was selfish 90% of the time and she knew it. She accepted the choices she made, even when they weren’t right or hurt those she cared about. In the end, you can tell she regrets her choices, her lost time, but in turn would make the same choices all over again.

finished back in sept ‘22 but never wrote a review but such an iconic, well done book. really interesting plot, it’s a book i find that most people would enjoy and like and the story is really captivating, would absolutely LOVE if this got made into a movie/series (if it’s done right ofc)

How does one move on from this ? My eyes burn. This is the third book in a row that has made me cry. anyways.........AMAZING BOOK. REALLY. Will I ever read it again ? NO. Why ? Because my mental health is down bad at this point.
