Oof! A tough read. The writing was superb and the story gut wrenching. (Beware of a few instances of implied animal cruelty if that bothers you.) This felt like Natural Born Killers but with a detailed aftermath of our FMC and how she just couldn't escape a life worth dying in. This one will stick with me for some time. Kolesnik is immensely talented and I look forward to whatever she puts out next even if her stories are bleak. ...more

Brutal. Do you remember the movie Precious? This is the story of a girl abused by her mother and escaping with her brother and the consequences of the abuse and the escape has on her life and her psyche. Kolesnik does an amazing job in this short novel of getting us inside the mind of this young girl/woman who despite the good intentions of others continues to believe she is either the dog her mom told her she was or is becoming the same kind of monster that her mom was.
