Brutal. Do you remember the movie Precious? This is the story of a girl abused by her mother and escaping with her brother and the consequences of the abuse and the escape has on her life and her psyche. Kolesnik does an amazing job in this short novel of getting us inside the mind of this young girl/woman who despite the good intentions of others continues to believe she is either the dog her mom told her she was or is becoming the same kind of monster that her mom was.

3.5 sadly had to round down on Goodreads.
I read this for the Splatterpunk Goodreads group March read. It's story told through the perspective of a girl name Suzy who has endured abuse at the hands of her mother. If it does one thing right it's depict the horrible reality of the world we live in and the evils that lurk there. While it is associated as extreme horror I personally would not put it in that category while it shares many a theme with those in that genre. This never really feels cheap ...more
