Dieses Buch ist eine Herausforderung und ein Kunstwerk.
Es erzählt einen unspektakulären Tag im Leben von Leopold Bloom, den 16. Juni 1904 („Bloomsday“) in Dublin. Aber diese Beschreibung wird nicht ansatzweise dem gerecht, was das Buch alles enthält. Es geht um Politik, Religion, Bildung, Gesellschaft, Erotik. Ehe, Kindstod, Suizid...
Man könnte also sagen: ES GEHT UM ALLES. Und wahrscheinlich noch viel mehr.
Mit seinem Schreibstil hat James Joyce geschafft unzählig viele [ ENGLISH VERSION BELOW ]

Man könnte also sagen: ES GEHT UM ALLES. Und wahrscheinlich noch viel mehr.
Mit seinem Schreibstil hat James Joyce geschafft unzählig viele Geheimnisse und Anekdoten in der Geschichte zu verstecken, sodass man sein Leben damit verbringen könnte dieses Buch zu studieren und zu analysieren und womöglich trotzdem noch einiges übersieht.
Streckenweise ist dieses Buch auch anstrengend: Punkt und Kommasetzung oder auch nur die Benutzung vollständiger Sätze wird vollkommen außer Acht gelassen...
Dies dient aber auch wiederum dem Stil und Gefühl, welches Vermittelt werden soll: Durch die Anwendung der „Bewusstseinströumung“ bekommt man das Gefühl die Gedanken selbst zu denken und im Geschehen zu stecken. Und James Joyce SCHAFFT es auch, dies zu vermitteln.

Diese Buch zu Lesen kostete Zeit und Energie, es hat mich aber auch sehr Bereichert und es gefiel mir sogar. Stellenweise wird das Lesen zwar unangenehm, weil die Themen dies einfach mit sich bringen, aber es war in jedem Moment stimmig.
Ein Meisterwerk, wie gesagt. Ein abstraktes, ultra-detailliertes Abbild des Lebens in Buchform.

This book is a challenge and a masterpiece.
I tells the Story of one day, the 16th of june 1904 („Bloomsday“) in the ordinary life of Leopold Bloom in Dublin. But this description doesn't measure up to what is portraied in this story. It talks about politics, religion, education, culture, society, erotic, marriage, infant death, suicide...
So you could say: This book ist about EVERYTHING. James Joyce hid so many secrets and anecdotes in this tale, you could spend a lifetime on studying and analysing this book and would still miss something.
At some parts reading was really exhausting: punctuation or simply whole phrases weren't used! But it's part of the „stream-of-conciousness“-technique, which express the chain of thoughts our main character thinks. You get the feeling to be part of his thoughts and feelings, which is quite dragging. And Joyce uses this technique very well.

Reading this book takes a lot of time and energy, but enriched me and to be hounest: I even liked the story. But at some times, reading was uncomfortble, mainly because of the topics it covered than,. But everything was coherent.
Like I said: A masterpiece. An abstract, ultra-detailed portrait of life in one book. ...more

What surprised me most about Ulysses was the modern feel to the writing. I would not have pegged it as a book written almost a hundred years ago.

Earthy. Fecund. And almost completely incomprehensible for me. The only other reading experience I could make comparisons to would be House Of Leaves, in the stream-of-consciousness narrative particularly, and the leaping from character to character like a demented spirit.

Two words come to mind for this story: Holy. Shit.

Consider it a synopsis.
