Ah, so sorry to all of the people who insisted that I would love this. It had exactly every single problem I was worried it would have. Plus, in my opinion, a weak conclusion to the mystery. I won't be continuing on with more of the series.

A fast read! The narrative is a bit slow with all the tangents about Strike's life, but the mystery is compelling and engaging. I really enjoyed the dialogue and how everything slowly came together about Lula's death. The final twist is a tiny bit predictable; you get an inkling of it pretty early in the novel, so when it finally happens, it's not really a surprise. Still good, though! I also really liked Robin as a character and I'm curious to see how the series is going to progress. ...more

I will always love a good murder/mystery story and this one certainly delivered. The way in which each clue was woven together was quite interesting and I definitely didn't see all the connections until the very end. And I also wasn't able to predict who the real murderer was; it came as a real shock to me! This book had a "slow burn" effect for me in which I was left wanting to know what was going to happen, which clue he was going to be chasing next, and who the real killer actually was.

While the last half of the book held my attention (listened to the audiobook while on a roadtrip), I can’t forget the fact that I set this book down around the halfway point three years ago and it stayed that way until now (listened to the last half over two days of driving). I have however forgot why I set the book down. So may I suggest if you pick up this book don’t take read it over a span of 4 years. You might like it better.
