I wasn't too sure what to expect from Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick when I first picked it up; I haven't read Fitzpatrick's famous Hush, Hush series but Black Ice was definitely getting a lot of buzz. Black Ice is a mystery novel about a teenager girl, Britt Pfeiffer, who decides to go on a camping trip in the Tenton Range mountains with her best friend Korbie. Calvin, Korbie's brother and Britt's semi-abusive ex, plans to go on the camping trip as the girls' chaperone but does not drive up with them. During their drive up to Korbie's parents' cabin in the mountains, a really bad snowstorm hits and Britt and Korbie have to seek shelter after their car breaks down. The two girls find a cabin nearby and in it are, lo and behold, two very attractive young men named Shaun and Mason.

After the two girls find Shaun and Mason, I nearly put the book down for two reasons: 1) Britt and Korbie begin to act very immature and instead of worrying that these two strangers might be dangerous, they begin to each lay claim to the guys and go all "mean girls" on each other ; and 2) This quote:

"I tapped my cup to his, grateful to have found Shaun, because for a minute there, I'd thought I was going to have to save myself. Instead, I'd wandered into the protective care of a sexy older man."

At this point, I internally screamed out "What the...?!" As someone who works on improving women's rights for a living, I was so mad that Britt would say something like this. It was such an anti-feminist and absolutely ridiculous statement that made me groan in frustration. This quote, as well as Britt's jealousy-drenched relationship with Korbie, affected how I perceived Britt for chapters to come and made it very difficult for me to connect with her for the majority of the book.

Okay so fast-forward, after Shaun holds Britt and Korbie at gun-point, the two girls realize how much danger they are in and finally begin to use their survival instincts (well, Britt does...Korbie pretty much remains pathetic throughout the book). Britt begins to realize that Shaun and Mason will keep her alive if she is useful to them and so, she offers to be their guide to help them get off the Teston Range mountains. Of course, at a certain point, Britt begins to fall for Mason, and she has to deal with her conflicting feelings of both resenting him for kidnapping her but also liking him because he understands her.

Despite all of the issues that I had with Black Ice book, there are two main reasons why I'm not giving it a super low rating. The first is that Becca Fitzpatrick really does do a good job of writing a suspenseful novel; she's able to keep the reader hooked enough to want to discover the mystery behind the murders occurring in the mountains. The second reason is that by the end of the book, Britt truly does display some character development. During her journey down the mountain with Mason, Britt struggles with the fact that she has Stockholm Syndrome (when hostages have positive feelings towards their captors) and also realizes that she has been too dependent on men her entire life. She begins to claim her independence and makes a decision to never become overly dependent on the men again.

Although I didn't love this book, I didn't hate it either. All in all, despite my problems with the characters, this book kept me engaged and did have some really good fast-paced parts; Becca Fitzpatrick has a very clear writing style and succeeds at throwing in great plot twists. I'm glad that I stuck through this book and didn't put it down at the start because of my problems with Britt. By the end of the book, I actually began to sympathize with Britt as a character and I really did want her to escape from her horrible situation. This book may not be everyone but I would say that you should give it a chance; although it didn't make it to my top-favorite reads of 2014 list, I could see it making onto someone else's list. ...more

Going into this I was't sure I'd like it. All I reviewers I follow on here weren't fans but this was the BOOKSPLOSION book of the month and I decided I need a book club and why not.

I had no problems with the characters. I hated Korbie but let's face it, she's a brat. And though Britt did annoy me at points, she grew on (Korbie never stopped being brat but Britt....grew a little). This is the first book I have read written by Becca Fitzpatrick. I was not sure if I was going to enjoy this book going in, because I am usually not a fan of thrillers but I was pleasantly surprised and I do have to say that I loved this book. I gave it 5 stars. I thought the pacing was very well done and it kept you on the edge of your seat. I think it did slow down for a bit in the middle, but it picked up again and was very well written. Okay right.
I don't know how I feel about this book. I wasn't particularly a fan of 'Hush, Hush', I could not read that. Then came along this book, and I was ready for an open mind to maybe like this book.

but oh my god some characters are just annoying. I thought the plot line was rather interesting with the murder and all but the relationships. Also I guess I was content with the ending but not really?

For a book that so many people seemed to dislike, I really enjoyed it! I found the plot interesting and the mystery captivating. In my opinion it was an all around enjoyable book!
