"Cuando perdí mi vista, Werner, la gente decía que era valiente. Cuando mi padre se fue, la gente decía que era valiente. Pero no es valentía; no tengo elección. Me despierto y vivo mi vida. ¿No haces tu lo mismo? "

HERMOSO LIBRO!!!!

This book was chosen for me by Rebekah for the A Million More Pages POFM - August 2017.

Nice to see how Marie-Laure and Werner came to meet each other. RIP Werner. Glad Marie-Laure was able to have a good life.

Puzzles, keys and radio transmissions are the central theme to this book. Two young people on two different sides of WWII who are hurtling towards each other through the commonality ofw radio air waves and the gem the Star of Flames.

This was a very different historical read than I usually read. The way it was told was nice, but since there wasn't a lot of dialogue it wasn't as enjoyable for me. Still it was a really good read. ...more

An excellent book about the human side of World War Two in Europe, in which the lives of two very different people and their families--one French, the other German--intersect.

Much has been said about this book to add anything meaningful. It is a masterpiece. Anthony Doer is now one of my favorite writers. This is a work of fiction that is at the height of its majesty, both in its translucent, trans-formative prose, and in the power of its gripping story. Totally enjoyable read.

Somewhere around a third or halfway through the text, the plot plods along. I think this was the part where Werner was trapped in the building cellar with Volkheimer. However, on the whole, the plot was interesting.

Of the three war novels -- The Book Thief, The Nightingale, and this one -- I would consider this text the most interesting. The prose is also of better quality.

Fascinating read. I did not give 5 stars just because it was sometimes choppy but overall great read.
