This book ended up being more interesting than I thought it would be but it's not exactly what I usually read either. It's a drama about four sisters who live during the civil war. They are girls living at home with their mother while their father is off for the war. Money is very tight and they wish they had nice things but they have to make do with what they have. And so the four sisters start dreaming of what their future lives might be like; they build air castles. Then as the book progresse This book ended up being more interesting than I thought it would be but it's not exactly what I usually read either. And so the four sisters start dreaming of what their future lives might be like; they build air castles. Then as the book progresses we learn which dreams come true and how they are different.

Alot of the book revolves around a person's character...what things they hold important. Like honesty, being good, helpful, doing things for others... It also mentions marrying for money or marrying someone for love even if they are poor. These ideals are at the heart of the book, especially helping others.

There were a lot of fanciful little facts from the past that I found interesting in here, like how pickled limes were all the rage back then..who would have thought? And it was interesting to see how they lived too..the one daughter trying to make jelly that wouldn't jell was a sure disaster! She must have been missing something! Hmm...maybe pectin? And how they would use a hot turnover as a handwarmer!

The story moved at a pretty good pace but not as fast as modern books. Still I managed to finish it in three days. And it's 491 pages. I did find a few surprises in here as the end didn't go the way I had thought it would. I had felt pretty sure a particular thing would happen but then it didn't.

I also suspect that most women who read this book will relate to one of the sisters. For me it was Jo. She's a tomboy, likes reading and writing. And really doesn't have much interest in the things that fascinate her sisters (like fashion, talking the proper way, etc)...she'd rather be stomping through mud to look at stuff outside then be worrying about wearing a bonet or keeping her dress clean. And finding a dream guy is not really the top of her list. If it weren't for her it might have been harder to read this... ...more
