Libertie Sampson is the daughter of a black, female physician in the Reconstructive era. Libertie's mother expects her daughter to follow in her footsteps and that they can practice medicine together. Libertie goes to school to learn medicine but is drawn to two women that are music students. Instead of doing her schoolwork, Libertie spends time with the musicians.
