2.75⭐️ wanted to love this book and I liked the idea of it just couldn’t connect to any of the characters, maybe just an overhyped book and came in with too many expectations 🤷🏼‍♀️ hoping the next book has improvements 🫣

So to begin with I feel like I went into this series opener with extremely low expectations all round due to what I have heard from everyone across all platforms. At this point I’m not understanding the hate it gets. Ive personally found it an extremely easy book to pick up and start reading and even easier to then continue reading it for long lengths of time. I can admit here that I already know this is not going to be a 5 star read for me but the story l Major spoilers read at own risk!!!!!!!!!

So to begin with I feel like I went into this series opener with extremely low expectations all round due to what I have heard from everyone across all platforms. At this point I’m not understanding the hate it gets. Ive personally found it an extremely easy book to pick up and start reading and even easier to then continue reading it for long lengths of time. I can admit here that I already know this is not going to be a 5 star read for me but the story line is lacking that magic that leaves me going to bed thinking about it, but overall it is still enjoyable.

The plot definitely picked up towards the end with Isla breaking the curses and Celeste’s betrayal and on top of that grime betrayal. I will say I was kinda confused with the curse after hearing multiple different things about it from different characters. I also didn’t understand most of the motives for each character clearly like we didn’t really get to see Azul and cleo’s characters shine through and I think that would have added an extra layer to the storyline.

The plot twist of celeste betraying Isla I saw coming from a mile away she had this whole meek helpless girl vibe but you could also tell she was just manipulating Isla and lowkey gaslighting her.

Isla I feel like was under developed and needed some more personality to her she was just a copy and paste of every other heroine FMC nothing that stood out to me personally within her personality.

The love triangle was undercooked 100%, her story with oro was beautiful and you could see it slowly building into something without being forced but with grim it felt like the author just added it in there to get the word count up especially with the whole I erased your memories. Again personally I feel as though I would have enjoyed having more page time on Isla’s memories with grim come flashing back so we can see the relationship allowing us to feel more of a connection with grim otherwise at the moment he’s just kinda a character that was there for the ride.

Also side note why did I envision oro as a grumpy old man thing entire time so I got the ice for him for like 3/4 of the book.

I will definitely still be reading the next one

5 stars isn’t enough this book is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Take your guesses throughout the book but know this, whatever you think is going to happen is wrong. The twist Alex Aster gives at the end of this is pure gold. I couldn’t even believe it. This is book is a perfect chefs kiss. Now, on to Nightbane. The book hangover I’m going to have from this world and its story 😭
