Amazingly written novel with a highly developed plot and characters. Again, I love how Sarah J. Maas is able to write a multitude of characters with unique personalities, it is truly a gift a lot of writers don't use. The plot twists in these books had me reeling and at moments I had to put the book down to think.

I've read ACOTAR and Crescent City, each time thinking that it couldn't get better. But, TOG might be my #1 ...more

But it hit me and tugged at my heartstrings. The EMOTION—I don’t say this lightly because I take all booktok type under extra scrutiny. But Sarah J Maas does not hold her punches when she wants the reader to feel every once if anger, pain, love, and sadness.

1. Fleetfoot is a lovely little angel. And my new unattainable romantic standard is a man who would dive into a portal worse than hell without hesitation to s It happened. I was a bit unsure the first 100-200 pages that I’d love this series. But it hit me and tugged at my heartstrings. But Sarah J Maas does not hold her punches when she wants the reader to feel every once if anger, pain, love, and sadness.

1. Fleetfoot is a lovely little angel. And my new unattainable romantic standard is a man who would dive into a portal worse than hell without hesitation to save my dog. Why has this not been done before? I don’t know, but well done Maas. Also, already checked—the dog lives in the series. I think it’s emotional manipulation and trauma porn to kill a dog in movies and series for no real reason other than make the reader hurt.

2. While Dorian and Chaol are great friends and allies, I don’t think either one of them are a good fit for Celaena. Which Maas really plays with exploring those relationships this book, and in a good way. I love having them around, and their friendship is the first event to make both men question their undying loyalty to the King. Which will obviously be crucial as he’s evil and rising in power. Dorian is sweet, but he seems in love with the idea of being in love. He fell quickly for Celaena, and though he’s respected he doesn’t own her, he seems more caught up with his own emotions than the light and dark that’s inside her. As for Chaol, he’s still too loyal to the throne for my own good. He also has a light disgust anytime she does anything gruesome. But that’s who she is at her core. In order to survive, she’s been sharpened into potentially the most lethal weapon in all the realms. She holds grief in her heart for everyone she’s had to kill, but she also doesn’t waste energy on trying to be ‘good’ by not killing. Because her people were wiped out. Slavery and brutality exist. She is willing to get her hands dirty, and that’s the kind of heroine we need. Chaol has the morality of Kings Guard, in a corrupt world. She needs him to stop her from entirely going over the edge, but I don’t see him as her equal or to really push her into her own skin. I mean, he was afraid of her in Fae form, so while he makes a move to protect her, ultimately, he shouldn’t keep making decisions about her without her. It’s not quite giving ACOTAR vibes, but it’s close. I don’t believe he’s going to go mad, though (but SJM could make me eat those words).

3. I know I’m going to enjoy Assassin’s Blade because I’ve enjoyed the series thus far. But part of me is a bit bitter right now that I have to take a break from the main storyline to read it. Maybe I should’ve started with it, but I’ve taken the recommendations from online book bloggers to read it as a flashback after the second book. So, here we go. Review will absolutely reflect if I agree with that decision. ...more
