I loved book #2 as much as #1.
You can feel the hand of Maas's writing even tho it's different from ACOTAR: less romantasy, more gore, a slightly less experienced hand in the writing, but that same way of capturing you into this world of her creation.
The book was amazing and the plot was exciting because there were so many unexpected turns (and deaths).
I suppose this might be a 5 star worthy book, but I didn't feel it because I ran into some sp ❁ re-read 2025: confirming 4.7 ⭐

I suppose this might be a 5 star worthy book, but I didn't feel it because I ran into some spoilers, saw things I shouldn't have and was less surprised about major things... for example I was so sad about Celeana and Chaol's relationship because I really loved them together, but I saw someone else in her future so I wasn't surprised by their not getting back together at the end... And I saw something about her being depicted the same as Aelin... Which is why the finale wasn't a major moment either. Still I enjoyed the reading experience even with those ruined surprises.
The major element tho, was the plot following Celeana and Nehemia's friendship, the regret of not being there for a friend and then having her taken away... It broke Celeana. I can't deny that it was a really sad bit of reading/listening.
And just after that beautiful build of a love story, with the promise of a future together, all that happiness destroyed in an instant.
I can't deny I felt the resentment toward Chaol. I loved him so much and even if it wasn't his fault, he didn't trust her enough to tell her, which disappointed me, and then they didn't have a real chance to talk properly... I understand both sides in this, which is worse because the situation is just sad.
Finally, the main positive note we have left at the end: the amazing man that is Prince Dorian. 💙
In the chapters after Nehemia's death he warmed my heart so much. The real mystery is how can he be such a good, pure and loyal man with a father like that.
The power of the friendships in this book is amazing. ...more

Reread 2025:

When I first read this in 2024, i thought it was a slow burner and additionally rated it 4 stars. However, after rereading this I’ve upped it to 5 stars because it was so much better the 2nd time round, I understood the storyline soooo much more

Anytime Nehemia gets mentioned it actually crushes me, she deserved sooo much better :(

And I still love Chaol, no one can change my mind

Always a downer when Chaol starts acting Chaol-like.

Audibly gasped at the end so I could feel what I felt the first time I read the last chapter of this book. It worked.
