I loved reading Tahereh Mafi's Furthermore and Whichwood, so I had high hopes for delving into Shatter me.
I couldn't do it.
I forced myself to go through the book, hoping it would improve. But the writing was too much. Too many metaphors that pulled me out the scene, things like "my jaw was hanging by a shoelace." Poor writing overall, which is surprising for Mafi. Her other books were superb.
The characters were flat, cliche, and boring. The plot, mundane and predictable. The world could have ...more

There were aspects of this book that I enjoyed, but then there were a lot that didn't really work for me.

2020 review:
Two stars still seems fair to me. The prose is ridiculously purple and makes the book off-putting, to be honest. I really enjoyed the second and third books in the series back when I first read them, but now I am wondering if I have just moved past this series. I have yet to pick up the fourth, fifth, or sixth book, and I just don't know if I ever will. I'm going to try to power through, but if I'm not feeling it by the end of the third book, I think I'm done with this series. :\

I liked how fast paced and easy to get through this was. I did get wore out on the run on sentences. I also felt like a lot of the FMC’s relationships felt forced and unnatural. I’m not sure I will continue the series or not. I don’t feel super passionate to which tells me maybe I shouldn’t, but overall it wasn’t a complete waste. I enjoyed the concept of the book and I’m assuming this was a major set up for the series. I could see how people would enjoy it.

I can’t even decide how I actually feel about this book. The plot and base of this story has SO much potential and can be really intriguing but some aspects just fell flat for me.
I love the idea of Juliette being “untouchable” and finding “love” with someone who’s finally able to touch her. But also like feels very surface level. Like she only actually loves him because she hasn’t had physical touch before but they really don’t know much about each other and have never spoken before the cell. E ...more

I just couldn’t find a way to finish this book. There were too many plot holes and too many genre mushed into one. Really horrible writing as well to the point where I am pretty sure two people wrote this book, one for prose, one for dialogue.
I know this is meant to be a dystopian romance, but it’s also trying to be a fantasy, sci-fi, and coming-of-age and doing none of it well. Glaring editing issues and unbelievable plot points. I actually threw my hands in the air at one point.
