This book deserves the hype! This is the first time that I've read anything from this author, and I want to work my way through his backlist now. He manages to infuse the story of the Wager with enough mystery and drama that it felt more like reading fiction than history. I'm hoping to write a more thorough review soon. ...more

David Grann has a great ability to weave a historical narrative. The story of the Wager and its crew is already fascinating in itself, but Grann gets you close to the characters to the point that you're almost suffering alongside them. His ability to make those long-dead characters alive again leaves you hanging on what will happen next. This one is remarkable, until the very end when the political realities of the day, unfortunately, don't make for a thrilling read. ...more
