I really enjoyed this book. I wish it had a trigger warning because there is a graphic sex assault in the beginning. The book is an examines of gender, societal, and familial roles - from roles in the workplace, down to the role of a pet. The main character is uncompromising. This borders on annoying me, except she is so intelligent that she is always in the right anyway. I just learned that Brie Larson is playing the main character in the TV series, and I think she will be perfect!

I was really conflicted at the beginning of this book. I almost stopped about 1/4 of the way through - not because of the quality of writing but because I found it so painful I wasn’t enjoying it at all. I’ve read plenty of heartbreaking stories but the (accurate) portrayal of the treatment of women in STEM (and in general) of the 1950s was torturous. And the hits *keep* coming.
