I don't really understand the hype for this book. There were certainly glimmers of great writing (view spoiler)but I was never completely engaged and by the last third, the part that the whole book was building to, it was really a slog.

4/5 It took me 60% of the book to really get invested in the characters. Once I hit that mark though, I flew through the book. While I think some of the more "modern day" chapters helped the story, half of them weren't needed. ...more

I'm going to skip the summary and go directly to my thoughts, scattered as they are.

I love historical fiction, especially fiction set in this time frame (World War II). And even though I have read a lot (and I do mean a lot!) of historical fiction, I must say that I haven't read anything quite like this book before.
