Quick note: the following review comes after my second reading of the novel and after reading the subsequent six Dune novels written by Frank Herbert. I think I gave Dune 4 stars after reading it the first time, but I liked it even more reading it again. In part this is due to me being a lot more familiar with the vision and the universe that Frank Herbert was trying to create after reading the sequels, and also it stems from understanding more of the influences that Herbert was drawing on. This book had all the key features one would want with great character development to match.
Although this book jumps back and forth between character, and some of my colleagues found it challenging to read due to this, I enjoyed it as I was glued to the book until I reached its end.

If you’re walking into this with knowledge from the movie, expect to have so many key components clarified. I felt disappointed that some of the background was left out.
