I had never read a fantasy book before and I was honestly convinced that I never would. I don’t know why I just believed it wasn’t my type of genre. The reason I decided to was because a lot of people said that this book was ‘romantasy’ and everyone was talking about SJM. I understand why there is a hype now.
This is my first fantasy book so I have nothing to compare it too but my review is 5 stars. Before I finished the book I had already brought the 2nd and once I have finished writing this I’ ...more

Re-read January 2024 in preparation for CC3:
Taking my rating down to 4 stars, to reflect my slightly stricter standards for a 5-star read now. This was probably more like 3.5 rounded up to 4. This book reads like a pretty standard fantasy one-off if you ignore the foreshadowing for the future, and if I was evaluating it as a standalone it would probably get 3 stars. I couldn’t stop listening! Highly recommend the audiobook version and I’m obsessed with this series. Suspense, mystery, action, romance, fantasy, and continued plot twists that surprise, even when as the reader you’re thinking the protagonist is being slow or not catching on. Some slow parts but overall a new favorite regardless.

The world building! omg, no words. It took a few pages to get into, but suddenly I was semerged into a new world and didn't want to get out of it. I had a really fun time reading it, it was easy to follow and just, ahhhhh! Speachless <3 can't wait to read every SJM book there is :)

I don’t normally do book reviews on books that I read… I’m just a small town, Iowa, farm mom that enjoys reading in my spare time, so my opinion isn’t particularly noteworthy, BUT I feel like this book deserves a book review because spreading the word is the least I can do.
First - I am not a fantasy reader. I am a romance reader through and through. I decided to go out of my comfort zone, recently, because of the hype about these ACOTR books in literally EVERY book group I’m in, so let’s be hon ...more

Slow start, but it picks up at the end. Overall, I really enjoyed it. However, things REALLY get GOOD in Book 2 (A Court of Mist and Fury).
