This was my last read of 2021, and it was SO good. It was the perfect read for a gray, depressing, post-holiday week—in large part because Laurel remained so hopeful though her circumstances were not promising. You know those characters that you think, “I want to be more like that”? Well, Laurel is one of those. Life can be very different in the Blue Ridge Mountains. From the first day, Jonathan encounters scary wildlife and meets people who intrigue and interest him. This story is filled with family ties, dedication to teaching and learning, decision making and more. A powerful story. The descriptions are amazing. I loved this book so much! It’s set in the Blue Ridge mountains. Laurel is 19, finished with high school, and hoping she can someday go to college to become a teacher. Jonathan is a Londoner who moves to her small town to teach for a year. I don’t often get truly surprised when reading books, but this one surprised me completely. I’ve already purchased the sequel and plan to start it right now.

This was my first introduction to Pepper Basham and it will NOT be my last. This book has it all: humor, great characters, an interesting setting and an enjoyable storyline. Early in the book it had several super funny lines and I was instantly hooked. I will be looking in to other works by Pepper very soon! Utterly charming read!
