Trust me when I say I am SHOCKED that I can't come up with a rating for this one. I am in turmoil because of my drastic change of opinion while reading this book. When I started reading, I was ridiculously annoyed at every other sentence. Like SO irritated, I've never felt that way toward a book. And the audiobook narrator was HORRIBLY nasally and difficult to listen to. Juliette's character was just word vomiting purple prose. Numerous times I exclaimed OUT LOUD, "oh my god Juliette, give me a Trust me when I say I am SHOCKED that I can't come up with a rating for this one. I am in turmoil because of my drastic change of opinion while reading this book. When I started reading, I was ridiculously annoyed at every other sentence. Like SO irritated, I've never felt that way toward a book. And the audiobook narrator was HORRIBLY nasally and difficult to listen to. Juliette's character was just word vomiting purple prose. Numerous times I exclaimed OUT LOUD, "oh my god Juliette, give me a break!" I even stopped reading after a few chapters due to my extreme annoyance. Thanks to my GR friends, I continued to see people reading this book and really enjoying it... I already owned it... it was a buddy read in my book club... so, I continued on. The more I read, the less annoyed I became. Literally. With each turn of the page, I either got more attached to the characters or the author started to calm down a bit, or both. The ending of the book was definitely a light lilac color instead of a full bright purple, thank god.

My favorite aspects of this book would spoil the story if I told you, and I don't like writing spoiler filled reviews, even if I hid them with the spoiler tag. Like I said, I hated this book at first, but the story is interesting and it unfolded really nicely, and now I find myself wanting to know what happens next. I don't know if I should be thanking the purple prose for feeling close to Juliette, but by the end of the book I felt close to her, even though I couldn't stand her randomly quantified, ridiculous metaphors in the beginning. I was very very pleased with the ending; I am glad that is where the author decided to go with the story, because she could have gone so many different ways that wouldn't have been as good.

Well, I would have lost my money on this bet... I will definitely continue reading this series.

purple prose a term used to describe literature where the writing is unnecessarily flowery. a) the writer described the situation using words that are too extravagant for the type of text, or any text at all. b) prose that is too elaborate or ornate.

And the writing!! It's so gorgeous.
A great opening book to a series.

UPDATE: 3/4/15
The more I think about it the more I think about how awful it was. I didn't like Juliet, I didn't like Warner, I didn't like Adam. The writing was quite ridiculous and the plot went no where. The only thing I liked was the end and the idea there, as well as Kenji, but honestly, that's not enough to bring my rating up 1 and a half stars. I also don't think I will be picking up the sequel. Although it has a cool idea going for it, if it's anything like Shatter Me it'll just go downhi ...more

There should be a new section on the good reads status "could not bring myself to finish it". There is a lot of hype around this book, and a lot of good reviews (almost 4.5 rating?) but for me it was unbearable.

The repeating words made it repetitive and boring, the metaphors were nonsensical and confusing, the world building was non existing and there was no depth to the few characters. ...more
