What Members Thought

Melodramatic, maddening, meandering and dramatic, in other words Dickens. I can picture many a younger reader shouting at the pages ‘get on with it’. If I be honest it’s probably going to be some time before I read another of his, but he is such a great writer that I will give him a second chance. I will probably track down a movie version to see if it works for me better that way. Finally, the book has probably the greatest opening and closing sentences I’ve come across in one novel.

The language was exciting, the story lines were hilariously dramatic and I finished it in tears. Amazing! I always try to look past the formality of the language when I read classics but I really didn’t have to this time. The scenes read like a really good soap opera and I loved it. I heard every sound, witnessed every fight and imagined every character crystal clear.
