• This book... bro there is so many words. All good!
• I’m always drawn in from the first chapter. I couldn't put it down.
• Barnes is a pretty great writer I’ve certainly read better but I’ll give it to her it was great
• I rly enjoyed being in Avery’s head
• a couple friends of mine who read this said she had no personality and that’s why they didn’t like it which I can see and understand but I rly didn’t have a problem with it.

(Before I say anything else, it's super creepy that Tobias Hawthorne followed Avery around for like 11 years and then left her an inheritance to bring his grandsons back together. He had a complete record of her life COMPLETE WITH PICTURES. What. a. creepy. stalker.)

I went into this so. incredibly. excited. Why wouldn't you want to read a book that was a mix between Knives 1.5 stars | (F) 45% | Ages 12+ | I don't think I've ever read a book I wanted to like so much and was let down so miserably. I went into this so. incredibly. excited. Why wouldn't you want to read a book that was a mix between Knives Out and Book Scavenger with the most fantastic cover imaginable? First off, I love Knives Out. Second, I LOVE Book Scavenger and puzzles and all the things. So why did I have to be let down so bad?

I'm sad to say it but I hated these characters. Every. Single. One of them. Avery was annoying and whiny and honestly had no juice. No relate-ability what so ever. I felt like Grayson and Jameson were mainly there for the "look at my muscles" factor and like not because they were actually interesting. I don't get the love triangle AT ALL. Jameson was obnoxious because he just kept using Avery and I didn't understand what she saw in any of them and vice versa. Grayson was literally a jerk the whole time and then he went with the whole "I just needed to protect you." Protect you from what? *tilts head in overwhelming confusion* Okay, maybe I didn't hate all the characters. I liked Nash. He was nice to Libby when she had no one. But even Xander left me feeling unimpressed. OHHH and Nan was such a badddd ace. Best character. And Max. WHAT THE FOX FAXING SHELL WHAT THAT? SUCH DUCK SHIP. Annoyed yet? That's how I felt every time there was a scene with Max in it. Comedic relief in an extremely obnoxious way. I was laughing while simultaneously shaking my head at how dumb it was and possibly banging my head on the wall.

I thought this book was going to be more of a solve-the-puzzles-to-get-the-inheritance type of thing, but I felt like the way it was executed was super pointless and not nearly as interesting. I didn't care about the mystery at all. I honestly didn't even get what we were trying to figure out. And the so called "TWIST" at the end? I didn't understand. What twist? There was no twist.

The Emily subplot was equally pointless and boring. That's a recurring theme with this book. And the chapters are waaayyyy too short. I hate 2 page chapters. They get on my nerves and did NOT help my growing dislike for this book.

I don't think there are any redeemable qualities about this book except the fact that I have a hard time rating books lower than this so it gets a gracious 2.5. Maybe this book just wasn't for me, though I highly doubt that since I'm totally the target audience for this one. Honestly, I think it's just because it was poorly written. I didn't get it, but maybe you will.

All of this being said, I will undoubtedly read the second one. I really need to see what people see in this book and I'm hoping the second one can redeem itself. But I still don't get the hype. ...more

There were parts of this I really liked and parts that could've been better.

I loved the length of the chapters! Most were just 3 or 4 pages long, which made it so quick to read.

Avery was a little plain. The basic YA heroine who was stubborn, overwhelmed, and torn between two boys. She didn't really have a personality in my opinion.

The mystery was fine, not amazing or anything, but I liked it nonetheless. Probably because I haven't read a mystery in a while.
