Could there possibly be a sequel? What happens to Mariamma and Lenin?
I think Verghese is a hopeless romantic. One love story after another through 3 generations.The writing is exquisite, precise (some felt like lessons for medical students) and informative. I love reading what I refer to as "cultural" reads: books that take me to lands that I will never visit and introduce me to the corresponding culture.

This book is daunting in size but the story it tells the incredible history spanning through 3 generations of a family. My review cannot due this justice. So beautifully written this family's story is filled with love, tragedy, sadness, forgiveness and perseverance. Hunker down for a masterpiece of a novel.

DNFing at 10%. This is my first Abraham Verghese, and I'm not impressed with the writing style. (I will give Cutting for Stone a try.) I'm not invested enough in the story to stick with this for more than 650 pages to go, and the story feels like it's been done before. I think I'm completely burnt out on the whole "sweeping family saga" genre, to be honest, as most books I've DNFed this year have been such.
